Our Story

Founder Mykal Velozo finds inspiration
while riding public transportation
on the streets of Los Angeles.

Mykal Velozo is a professional hairstylist and creator of numerous philanthropic haircutting programs that serve a full spectrum of audiences, including transgender youth and others in the LGBTQIA community, individuals transitioning from sex trafficking situations, as well as people of all ages who are experiencing homelessness. As a 2014 graduate of Sassoon Academy, Velozo relocated from Portland, OR to Los Angeles, CA. Being new to the area, he struggled to find hair models to practice techniques. However, a chance encounter with a bus driver—a single mother struggling to make ends meet—inspired him to look inward and provide his complimentary professional services to those in need. Partnering with local shelters, Velozo honed in his skills which also fueled his passion for giving back. He began to establish relationships with nonprofits, like “Dress for Success,” where he provided weekly haircuts to women reentering the workforce. Realizing the impact of his work, he expanded his efforts and founded Hairstylists for Humanity in 2019. Through his newly created network that began on social media, he empowered his industry peers to volunteer and make a difference in diverse communities worldwide. In 2023, Velozo launched hairstylistsforhumanity.org which includes a growing list of organizations across the globe seeking volunteer support from hairstylists. Velozo remains dedicated to his mission through the creation of haircutting programs and starting new partnerships within nonprofits to inspire others to give back and create positive change.
